High Point's Calvin Hrycay Races at Youth Nationals This Week
High Point, NC – Calvin Hrycay rowed his final practice on Oak Hollow Lake this morning ahead of this weekend’s 2023 USRowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida.
The high school single sculler qualified for nationals by placing in the top 4 of the U17 single sculls event at USRowing’s Southeast Regional Championships in Georgia last month.
The youth national championship is the premier junior rowing event in the USA, and approximately 3,500 athletes will compete in more than 840 crews representing 225 teams from across the country vying for national titles in 39 boat classes.
Calvin is slated slated to begin racing with a time trial on Thursday afternoon. The trial will reduce the field from 29 scullers to 16 to go through to the A/B semi final round on Friday. The top 8 crews from the semi-finals will race in Sunday’s final. Remaining scullers will race for top 25 national rankings in B, C, and D finals.
Qualifying for nationals highlights a year of highs for the High Point sculler, who is a rising high school junior, who medaled at the Dogwood Junior Regatta and was named club Rower of the Year in May.
