Triad United Set to Host Lenny Peters Cup & Bethany Medical North Carolina Rowing Championships on April 12

World’s Best Rowers to Challenge Team USA for Lenny Peters Cup
High Point, NC – Triad United Rowing Association will host the prestigious Lenny Peters Cup in conjunction with the Bethany Medical North Carolina Rowing Championships on Oak Hollow Lake on April 12. This highly anticipated rowing event will feature the best rowers from around the globe competing against Team USA for the coveted trophy.
The combined rowing event is expected to draw over one thousand rowers and up to 5,000 spectators to Festival Park.
The Lenny Peters Cup, named after the legendary High Point doctor, business entrepreneur, and philanthropist is a testament to the city’s rapidly increasing rowing heritage. The event will showcase Paris Olympic medalists against America's finest scullers.
“This event is primarily drawing visitors from overseas and surrounding states," said race director Gene Kininmonth. "It is likely to be the biggest rowing event ever held in North Carolina. We have a gorgeous lake venue and a very well prepared volunteer corps ready to welcome rowers and their families to High Point.”
The Lenny Peters Cup sees 8 rowers (4 men & 4 women) from around the world compete against 8 rowers from the United States in a Ryder Cup style match race format for points played out in three boat classes: Single Sculls, Quadruple Sculls, and Mixed Quadruple Sculls.
There are 24 points on offer over the three rounds of racing.
Round One will see each USA athlete race an overseas athlete in single sculls over the Olympic distance of 1,500 meters with each winner earning one point for their team. The draw for the single sculls races will be randomly assigned. In Round Two, USA will race the World Team in Men's & Women's Quadruple Sculls over 1,500m, with the winning crews each winning 4 points. In Round Three, the teams will each race two crews head to head in Mixed Quadruple Sculls. The winners will receive four points. In the case of a tie, the winner of the second Mixed Quad race will determine the winner of the Lenny Peters Cup.
Team USA will be selected by USRowing’s High Performance Director following US selection Trials. The World Team is selected following acceptance of invitations by athletes selected on Olympic results, world rankings, and recent racing results.
The regatta will be Livestreamed to Youtube by a professional broadcast team. In addition to the boat racing the event will also feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including food vendors, beer garden, music, and Best in Show dog competition.
A New Era: From Eight-Oared Sweep Racing to Sculling
